50 Firsts

On Boxing Day 2021 Julie turned 50. Although not entirely comfortable with getting older she wanted to celebrate the milestone in a meaningful way to her. So, she committed to a personal challenge of 50 new experiences.

Julie was initially inspired by a friend who set out to create 50 experiences in her 50th year as her Mum had passed away at the age of 52. She also remembered she had two folders full of ideas she’d collected over the years. Finally, Julie had taken her kids abseiling and water skiing for the first time and felt inspired to try new things again.

Over three months Julie completed 50 new experiences which she called ’50 Firsts’. She chose experiences that were new and meaningful to her, that aligned with her values, made her face perceived limitations and that stretched her outside her comfort zone. Many of the experiences evolved from having an open mind and saying yes to opportunities. Every experience aligned with her core values of simplicity, authenticity, fun, connection, healthy living, openness and creativity. She intentionally created bite-sized experiences that would fit into her busy lifestyle of being a working mum with 4 growing kids, so many were on weekends, local and free. Julie identified 10 areas for each of these firsts which included: Family, Fitness, Fun, Friendships, Facing Fear, Fulfilment, Finding, Fulfilment, Faith and Foundations.

Julie found the challenge confronting and uncomfortable. But also invigorating and empowering. She couldn’t have achieved the highs without the lows or the freedom in being herself without being open and vulnerable. Many of the struggles humans experience are because of the self-limiting beliefs we have inside our own heads. This challenge helped Julie recognise those limitations and embrace them instead of being controlled by them.

The more she stepped out of her comfort zone, the more empowered she became. The more willing she was to be vulnerable, the more confident she became. The more she created deeper connections, the more joy she found in every-day life. For Julie, it started as a one-off challenge but it’s now become a way of life. And clearly something that has changed her life for good.
